Many of us possess an array of different brushes to apply cosmetic products. People typically have between five to fifteen makeup brushes, each one specifically designed for a part of your face. These tools are usually composed of synthetic fibres and have a long handle to help the user apply their cosmetics. While individuals willingly spend long stretches of time applying makeup, and removing it, they may easily forget to clean their brushes regularly. This is an easy, but important, task as regular maintenance will add to the brush’s usability and lifespan. In order to ensure the longevity and durability of one’s brushes, individuals should monitor their brushes appearance, clean them regularly, and store them in a safe place when they’re not being used.

Risks of Not Cleaning Your Brushes

Neglecting to clean your makeup brushes will eventually damage them to the point where they become unusable. Unwashed brushes will also affect the desired application of colour by getting mixed with previously used products. They also carry bacteria, which increases the likelihood of developing skin irritations, infections, and acne breakouts. In addition, constantly using unwashed brushes can lead to premature wrinkles as the skin becomes stressed and loses collagen.

Deciding When to Clean Them

The exterior of your makeup brushes will tell you a great deal about them. While your tools may still retain their overall shape, despite numerous uses, they will look cakey and become discoloured when they’re dirty. If you run some water on an unclean brush, you would quickly see various colours bleeding out of the bristles.  If that’s the case, it’s time to grab a cleanser and get to scrubbing.

Implementing a Cleaning Routine

While individuals likely have many different makeup brushes, there are certain cleaning routines that should be followed to help preserve them. It’s important that you use cleaning agents that are free of harsh chemicals as these brushes will be touching your skin. It is recommended that you first rinse your brush under warm water, apply your cleaning solution (hand soap, shampoo, dish detergent, or specially made brush-cleaning solutions are best) and gently massage the cleaner into your bristles. Rinse clean and leave to dry by resting the brushes on the edge of the counter. Makeup brushes that are regularly used should be cleaned at least once a week, but foundation brushes should be cleaned after each use.

Storing Them for Future Use

Once you have thoroughly cleaned your brushes, they should be completely dry before being put away. Storing them upright (in a brush rack or jar) will help them fan out into their natural shape. In addition, keeping them in a dark, cool place (such as the cabinet under the sink) will help prevent dust and debris from getting on the bristles.
