With the variety of options out there, picking swimwear can seem overwhelming. We’re breaking down your options, though. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s going on in the world of women’s swimwear.

Bikini Tops

Bikinis are by far one of the more popular options in women’s swimwear. They’re not particularly great for those seeking some coverage; however, you’ll sweat the least on a hot beach in a scanty two-piece ensemble.

Bikinis come in a wide range of styles and colours, but the general theme is exposed skin. That may be what you want when the sun is beating down. When you’re shopping for a bikini, you’ve got versatility too. The bottom piece need not match the top piece. Here are some style features to consider when searching for the right bikini.

  • Necklines

Bikini tops are generally known for resembling your average bra, with a low neckline. That’s one option—but if you’re hoping for a bit more upper-body support, you can opt for something that spans your whole chest, sports bra style.

  • Support

In addition to sports bra fits, anyone who wants good chest support can seek out bikini tops with underwiring.

  • Straps and Back

Thicker straps offer additional support as well. Keep in mind the width of the straps if you’re larger-chested and wishing for some security out of your bikini top. However, if you’re focused on achieving the ultimate tan or you want to feel the breeze on your skin, you have the option to go strapless or don spaghetti straps.

What’s going on at the back of your swimwear is another consideration. The back doesn’t have to match the front (though it could). You may prefer a higher neckline paired with an exposed back. You can also choose a racerback style for a combo of extra chest support and visible back.

Bikini Bottoms

If you’re getting a bikini top, you’re going to need a bottom to go with it. Have fun with bikini shopping. Your possibilities are endless. Here are some available bikini bottom styles to consider.

  • High-Waisted or Low-Waisted

Both high-waisted and low-waisted bottoms have their benefits. High-waisted bikini bottoms, extending above your belly-button, are going to hide your tummy. Some high-waisted bottoms come with a built-in belt, for an even more cinched appearance. Low-waisted bikini bottoms can create the impression of a longer torso.

  • Boy Shorts

Boy shorts cover so much more than the average bikini bottom. If you want ultimate privacy and comfort, you can pair your bikini top with a pair of swim shorts.

One-Piece Swimsuits

The next most popular swimwear option after bikinis is the one-piece swimsuit. This style covers most of your body, except your arms and legs. It’s preferable for ladies who don’t want a lot out in the open. That isn’t to say you can’t get a more risqué one-piece. You can search for deep necklines, open backs, and cut-out sides.

Rashguards

A rashguard isn’t far off from a t-shirt, but it’s made of the same material as swimwear. Rashguards come with long sleeves or short sleeves. They generally end at the hips; however, you can find crop top rashguards if that’s more your style. If you’re thinking a soaking rashguard sounds hard to take off, some come with zippers.

Tankinis

A more modest version of a bikini, the tankini is a two-piece bathing suit; however, the top mimics a classic tank top. You’ll get far more coverage wearing a tankini than you would a bikini, but still have the convenience of being able to remove the bottom piece for speedy bathroom breaks. You can pick between a tighter and looser, dress-like fit.

Full-Coverage

If modesty is important to you, particularly for religious reasons, you can go for full-coverage swimwear. Full-coverage offerings include a one or two-piece bathing suit that conceals your arms and legs—or it may mean swimwear designed to meet religious standards, like the burkini. You may also prefer full-coverage if you have sensitive skin that’s prone to sunburning.

Features That Matter

  • Ruffles

Ruffles can go a long way in creating the illusion of volume. Strategically placed ruffles at the backside and chest might be something to look for if you’re hoping to enhance flatter parts of your body.

  • Colours and Prints

Your choice in colour/prints comes down to skin tone and personal preference, but perhaps it’s important to note that you can use bold colours and prints to draw attention to features, and use dark colours to minimize.
