Our smartphones are our most important and beloved devices. They are how we connect with the world and stay current and organized. Much of the activity that happens via our smartphones—like posting on social media or choosing our background and wallpaper images—is customized to our liking. It was only a matter of time before the design of our smartphones caught up with the bespoke movement. Consumers want their personalities and interests reflected in their devices. This has produced a demand for bespoke smartphones, despite some manufacturers being a bit slow out of the gate. Let’s look at the growing popularity of bespoke smartphones and how the mobile industry should adjust to satisfy its customer base.

What is a Bespoke Smartphone?

A bespoke smartphone is when the design of a phone is customizable. The current bespoke trend is dedicated to customizing the front, back, and frame of a smartphone. This trend has pushed some smartphones into the luxury category where people are willing to pay more for a device that looks the way they want. Google smartphones allow for customizable interfaces and features, but Samsung is leading the bespoke smartphone movement. This tech giant launched the Galaxy Bespoke Edition, a digital studio that lets you customize the body of certain Galaxy models. The goal of bespoke smartphones is to create a signature look, and Samsung should reap the rewards of making this option available for their customers.

The Rise of Bespoke

Who doesn’t customize their smartphone’s wallpaper with a photo or image or organize their apps the way they want? We want to imprint ourselves onto our devices. People don’t want the same tech as everyone else. We want to feel unique, and our handheld tech is an extension of our personalities. The rise of bespoke smartphones exemplifies this and follows the trend of bespoke tech commonly found in the laptop and gaming system categories. As demand for bespoke smartphones intensifies, the supply should follow.

Benefits of a Bespoke Smartphone

One benefit to consumers of a bespoke smartphone is that the phone is unmistakably their own. It allows owners to inject their tastes and styles into the design of their smartphones. In the same way that millions like to use skins and decals on their laptops or add flair to their cars, bespoke smartphones let people enjoy the look of their smartphones and have fun designing their exteriors.

One overlooked benefit is that a bespoke smartphone can be easier to find. These smartphones might be for you if you find yourself often misplacing your phone or unable to spot its indistinguishable body or case on a surface or among clutter. Since the smartphones that are part of Samsung’s Bespoke Edition are their flip models, you can enjoy the benefits of a more compact device that can fit securely into your pocket. Additionally, you get a twinge of nostalgia for when most cell phones were flip models. These bespoke flip phones make it more comfortable to vlog or have a video call as they can sit safely on a surface. Another useful feature is the cover screen on the exterior. This lets you take a photo or check the weather or your calendar, among other features, without opening the phone. That said, nothing will beat the benefit of having a smartphone that’s unique and stands out.

Samsung Galaxy Bespoke Edition

The Samsung Galaxy Bespoke Edition provides a digital studio that lets you customize the following parts of your Galaxy smartphone: Front Back Frame

You can select colours and designs for the top and bottom of your smartphone or can mix and match. While the options are currently limited, users seeking a bespoke device will have to decide which look and style appeals to them. The models that are part of Samsung’s Bespoke Edition include but are not limited to: Galaxy Z Fold 6 Galaxy Z Flip 6 Galaxy Z Flip 5 Galaxy Z Flip 4

If you’re shopping in-store for a bespoke smartphone, remember that Samsung offers some models exclusively online.

Does a Bespoke Smartphone Excite You?

A bespoke smartphone might not be for everyone, but there should be enough interest and demand to see this trend expand in popularity. Customization is popular across tech, and smartphones are finally catching up to this movement. While Samsung has brought a bespoke option to market, it would be unsurprising to see other smartphone manufacturers release similar options.
