The female body fluctuates. Whether it’s hormones, weight gain, pregnancy, or other reasons, the bra you had a few years ago may not fit you anymore. Perhaps you’ve always been a certain bra size, but after years of wearing the same one, it has stretched out and no longer provides the support it once did. The bottom line is that “the girls” need proper support, and we’re here to help you find the perfect fit for them. Read on for the complete guide, covering everything from sizing to popular plus-size options.

What is Considered a Plus-Size Bra?

Any bra with a band size of 38 and up or a cup size of D and up are considered plus size bras. The design, material, and construction all play a role in ensuring maximum comfort and support. Many women struggle with finding a bra that holds everything in place without feeling too tight or restrictive. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry—you’re not alone.

The Key to Comfort and Support

Comfort and support are the two most important factors when shopping for a plus-size bra. But some may look good but lack the structure needed to provide proper lift and containment. The right plus-size bra will have high-quality wires, elastic, lining, and thick, supportive cups designed specifically for larger breasts.

Signs Your Bra Doesn’t Fit Properly

A well-fitting bra should make you feel comfortable and supported throughout the day. However, if you experience any of the following, it may be time for a new one:

  • Pain or Red Marks – If your straps or underwire leave painful indentations, your bra may be too small.
  • Spillage – If your breasts are spilling out of the cups, you likely need a larger size.
  • Gapping – If there’s space between your breasts and the cups, your bra is too big.
  • Riding Up – If the band is rising up your back instead of sitting firmly, the band size is too large.
  • Constant Adjustments – If you constantly need to adjust the straps or reposition your bra, it’s not the right fit for you.

How Your Bra Should Fit:

Ideally, you’ll want a bra with straps that don’t dig into your shoulders and are comfortable enough that you forget you’re wearing one. The general rule of thumb is that you should be able to fit two fingers underneath the bra band when it’s on the loosest hook.

How to Measure Your Band Size:

Wrap a tape measure around your chest just below your armpits. It shouldn’t cut off your circulation but it shouldn’t be so loose. Find a snug happy medium. If the number is even, for example 38, stick with that as your band size. If the number is odd for example, 39, round up to 40 and use that as your band size.

How to Measure Your Cup Size:

Now loosely wrap a tape measure around the fullest part of your chest. You can subtract the band size from your bust size to determine your cup size. Use the chart below as a guide to measure yourself.

4 Inches = D Cup

5 Inches = E Cup

6 Inches = F Cup

7 Inches = G Cup

8 Inches = H Cup

9 Inches = I Cup

10 Inches = J Cup

And so forth.

Final Thoughts

A well-worn bra loses its elasticity over time. It’s not unheard of to replace your bras every year or so depending on how frequently you wear them.
