No relationship is immune to life’s challenges. A relationship is like a garden; it needs to be nurtured with time, energy, and care. Although that can be easier said than done, you will sometimes come across challenges in life that make your relationship harder to maintain.
After all, you are two people, each with your own feelings, expectations, and ways of communicating. Even if you care deeply about each other, misunderstandings and differences in needs can create challenges. Let’s look at a few obstacles or challenges in your relationship, and how to address them.
Communication
A relationship thrives on communication. Sometimes, though, couples can drift apart when their communication falters. They might expect their partner to understand their needs instantly, without them saying a word, and then play the blame game. In other cases, they play the blame game when things go wrong. This can easily lead to resentment. To counteract this, find time and space to talk to each other. Schedule a time for both of you to have a heartfelt chat, once a week or before bed at night. This will help keep things in check and make your relationship thrive.
Connection
The daily grind can take a toll on your relationship. Sometimes, unbeknownst to you, you might forget to give your partner the care and attention they need. The first spark that you had for each other, being intimate and talking for hours on end, can quickly be replaced by life’s dull routine. That’s why it is important to make time for yourself to connect with each other. That transcends physical intimacy; it could simply mean talking for a few minutes every morning, giving each other a hug or a kiss, or saying “I love you.”
Fun
When did you last have a joyful, good, jolly time together? If you find it hard to remember, then you have something to work on. Contrary to what most people think, fun is not only for children. Sadly, because of life’s challenges, many couples forget to schedule a date night, vacation, or simply an outing; believe it or not, that can take a physical and mental toll on you. When you routinely make time for each other, you will strengthen your relationship and bank on those joyful memories when life gets hard.
Commitment
As you transition from being in love to loving each other each day, the spark of love and magic can quickly be replaced by the ordinary. Any fulfilling relationship needs a boost from time to time. That’s why it is vital for you, as a couple, to reflect on your relationship. That can include scheduling a few minutes each month to look back and reflect on your relationship: what has been done and what can be done better. Share five things that you appreciate about each other that will allow your relationship to flourish.
Growth
For any relationship to thrive, three parts need to grow: You, Me, and Us. Be frank and open with each other about how you would like your relationship to develop. As a couple, your goals, needs, and priorities will undoubtedly change over time. That’s why it is important to regularly check in with each other and create a space for an open, honest conversation. You can do much to support each other by encouraging one another’s personal goals and setting shared goals for your relationship. Don’t forget to talk about your values, or what’s really important to you, and allow your partner to do the same. If you overlap or disagree on an issue, find a way for both of you to get what you need.
Trust
Trust, like communication, is the foundation of any relationship. Sometimes, it is assumed to be there until something major rocks the foundation. Don’t wait for that to happen. To address trust issues, both partners need to create a safe space where they can openly express their feelings. For example, if your husband is being secretive about his phone messages and you feel that something is wrong, take the time to talk to him about it before the issue festers and gets out of hand.
When challenges arise in your relationship, it is important to address them head-on before they grow and create distance between you. Although conversations can be hard and uncomfortable, facing problems together can strengthen your relationship and help you develop deeper love, respect, and understanding for one another.
