Skin, the vibrant shield of all living organisms, connects tissues and safeguards the internal elements of every physique. As the largest organ of the human body, skin serves a multitude of vital functions – It helps to regulate temperature, offers sensory insight, and preserves moisture within every framework. As our skin does a lot for us, it is important to implement both products and routines that will protect and sustain it for years to come. If you want to keep your skin hydrated, remove daily debris, reduce your signs of aging, and maintain a clear complexion, consider implementing the following six procedures into your skincare routine.

Cleanse the Day Away

After a long workday, washing your face can be deeply refreshing; as each drop of water rinses away the day’s stress and grime, your skin is being primed for the first step in its skincare routine: cleansing. Cleansing involves combining a dermatological product (either gel, cream, oil, bar, or powder-based) with water to help eliminate excess oil, makeup, dirt, sweat, and dead skin cells from the skin – impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. However, as skin types vary among individuals, cleansers are not a one-size-fits-all skincare solution; the cleanser you choose will depend on your skin type, as well as the specific concerns you wish to target. By thoroughly cleansing the skin, you not only achieve a clean and refreshed complexion, but you also create an optimal canvas for subsequent skincare treatments.

Toner Up

Cosmetic toners, available as water-based lotions, mists, and tonics, are designed to refresh the skin without stripping it of its natural moisture. They deliver an extra-deep clean, helping to seal pores, balance pH levels, and remove remaining debris that cleansers may have missed. As toners have been formulated for different skin types, they are suitable for everyone: those with dry, normal, or combination skin can benefit from hydrating toners, while individuals with oily or acne-prone skin may opt for purifying toners.

Treat yourself

Skincare treatments (including serums and crease-ease gels) are specialized products that are designed to address specific concerns, improve skin health, and enhance the overall appearance of the skin. As they are composed of concentrated formulas and active ingredients, they help to slow down the signs of aging, make tiny wrinkles less noticeable, and reduce uneven skin tones. These cosmetics are typically packaged into small bottles with droppers, and only require a few drips to treat a specific area. Apply skincare treatments after cleansing and toning, but before moisturizing, to ensure that your skin absorbs the hydrating benefits these cosmetics have to offer.

Elevate and Exfoliate

Exfoliation, though often overlooked, is an essential step in any skincare routine. It involves using various products (like scrubs, acids, and enzymes) to dissolve dead skin cells, unclog pores, brighten complexions, and revitalize the skin. To optimize the benefits of the exfoliating product, gently massage it into the skin using circular motions, while avoiding the eyes and any open wounds. However, since exfoliating products often contain abrasive substances, it is recommended to limit exfoliation to one to three times per week.

Less is More

Moisturizers come in various forms (such as lotions, creams, and ointments), and offer a plethora of benefits for your skin. These skincare essentials do more than just reduce fine lines – they also deeply hydrate your skin, leaving it toned and texturized, while also protecting it against infections and environmental stressors. While you may be tempted to slather yourself in product, dermatologists recommend applying just a nickel-size portion to area you wish to treat, to prevent clogging your pores and triggering breakouts.
