Nighttime skincare is part and parcel of any beauty regimen. Taking care of your skin while it regenerates is one of the best things you can do to give it a little tender loving care.

While you sleep, your skin shifts from “protective,” to “repair” mode. During sleep, the cell turnover increases, and the skin produces collagen. Collagen is an important ingredient that helps maintain the skin’s firmness and elasticity.  Below are a few things you can do to help ensure your skin stays healthy.

Double Cleanse at Night
Cleansing is an important part of any nighttime skincare routine. If you wear makeup during the day, it’s vital to start with a gentle makeup remover wipe and follow up with an AHA cleanser like the GlyPro AHA Resurfacing Cleanser for a deeper clean. It’s important to follow these steps because if oil, dirt, or bacteria accumulate on the skin, they can easily lead to breakouts, which in turn can cause acne, rashes, and a host of other skin problems. When you wash your face, avoid tugging or pulling at your skin with a dry towel, regardless of your skin type. A gentle dab or pat helps you avoid irritation.

Toners and Exfoliants at Night Are Essential
Toners are a useful addition to your skincare routine. Toners were initially used to restore the skin’s pH after cleansing; however, in our day and age, they have evolved and can do everything from removing dirt and residues to providing benefits similar to those of serums. Armed with ingredients like AHAs, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins that can exfoliate, they can brighten, soothe, and hydrate the skin. The Hydra-Bright Pro 5 Liquid Exfoliant contains five distinct acids perfect for all skin types.

Retinol Rules at Night
Retinoids, or vitamin A derivatives, play an important role in promoting cell production and in making the skin produce more collagen.  When your skin has enough collagen, it maintains its elasticity, leaving the skin smoother, tighter, and with fewer lines and wrinkles. When considering adding retinol to your nighttime skincare routine, start with a low-strength formula and work your way up. There are many products you could use, such as 1 per cent retinol or the GlyPro Retinol Drops. When you gradually increase the retinol concentration, your skin builds tolerance, helping you avoid side effects like redness, dryness, or peeling.

Moisturizing is Key
Moisturizing your skin at night rejuvenates it, boosts cell renewal, and prevents dryness. If you struggle with oiliness or frequent breakouts, go for a moisturizer that hydrates without clogging pores. If you have dry skin, choose a thicker, richer moisturizer to hydrate and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, such as the Bio Renew EGF Cream, Vita E Essential Cream, or any other restorative cream.

Don’t Forget your Eyes
One of the most popular spots to show signs of ageing is under the eyes. After all, the skin under the eyes is thin and super delicate, making it more susceptible to collagen breakdown. To prevent the appearance of ageing, try products like the C-Shiled Eye Restore Hydrator. The specialized blend of antioxidants and peptides in it boosts the skin’s elasticity and prevents crow’s feet and under-eye discolouration.

Pay Attention to the Way You Sleep

Among the many other steps you can take to keep your skin healthy is to ensure that your pillowcase is washed clean at least once a week. Try your best not to sleep on your face; sleeping on your back, for example, can help you avoid unnecessary collagen breakdown while you sleep. Last but not least, try to include an overnight face mask once or twice a week for a bit of hydration and regeneration when needed.
