Nail polish is more than a simple beauty product; it is a creative element for self-expression and a fun way to showcase your unique style and add a splash of colour to your look. Whether you prefer classic shades or bold and vibrant hues, properly finishing your nail polish application can make all the difference in achieving a polished and long-lasting manicure. Here are several finishing tips to enhance the vibrancy and longevity of your nail colour.

Base Coat Matters

Before you apply your favourite nail polish shade, start with a quality base coat. A base coat provides a smooth canvas for your nail polish and helps protect your nails from staining and damage. It creates a barrier between your natural nails and the pigments in the nail polish, ensuring that the colour stays true and doesn’t discolour your nails.

Apply Thin Layers

One common mistake people make when applying nail polish is using thick, gloopy layers. Instead, opt for thin, even coats. Thin layers dry faster and adhere better to the nail surface, reducing the chances of chipping and peeling. If you need to build up the colour intensity, apply multiple thin layers, allowing each to dry completely before adding the next.

Choose the Right Brush

The brush that comes with your nail polish can significantly impact the application. Look for a flat, broad brush that can help distribute the polish evenly and cover your nail in fewer strokes. Additionally, ensure the brush is clean and free from dried polish to avoid streaks and clumps.

Be Patient Between Coats

Typically, waiting a few minutes between applying each coat to ensure they are dehydrated to achieve a flawless finish would be best. Rushing the process can lead to the polish’s smudging, denting, or wrinkling. You can also use quick-dry topcoats to speed up the drying process while adding an extra layer of protection.

Seal the Deal with a Topcoat

A high-quality topcoat is essential to seal and protect your nail colour. A topcoat not only adds shine, but also helps extend the life of your manicure. It forms a protective barrier that shields your nails from chips, scratches, and fading. Look for topcoats that are fast-drying and formulated to resist chipping.

Avoid Hot Water Immediately After Application

Nail polish can take time to cure fully, even if it feels dry. To prevent premature chipping or smudging, avoid exposing your nails to hot water, like washing dishes or taking a hot shower, immediately after applying nail polish. Give your manicure time to set and harden before subjecting it to heat or moisture.

Moisturize Your Cuticles

Keeping your cuticles moisturized is essential for the health of your nails, and enhances the overall look of your manicure. Dry, ragged cuticles can detract from the beauty of your nail colour. Apply a cuticle oil or moisturizer regularly to keep your cuticles soft and your nails looking their best.
