Before we delve into the best vitamin C serums for each skin type, it’s important to understand the benefits of vitamin C.

Harmful UV rays, air pollution, chronic stress, poor diet, processed foods, excess sugars, and alcohol can all cause damage to our skin over time. Luckily, vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means that it can fight off some of these toxins. According to Harvard Health, vitamin C may help prevent sun damage, improve wrinkles, dark spots, and acne.

It’s no wonder dermatologists recommend products that have vitamin C in them. Just as our bodies crave antioxidant consumption through food and supplements, similarly, our skin also craves topical antioxidants. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that applying vitamin C twice daily improved acne when compared to a placebo.

What to Look For in a Vitamin C Serum:

Not all vitamin C serums are made equally. According to a 2025 article in Healthline, the most effective vitamin C serums have a 10-20 per cent concentration of L-ascorbic acid and contain vitamin E and ferulic acid which prevents the Vitamin C from breaking down too quickly.

The Best Vitamin C Serums for Every Skin Type

  1. For All Skin types

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic serum

While this serum is on the pricier side, there is a good reason to use it. The brand SkinCeuticals is known as the holy grail of vitamin C serums because of its founder’s research.

Dr. Sheldon Pinnell was the Chief of Dermatology at Duke University Medical School and had been studying the effectiveness of 15 per cent  L-ascorbic acid, with vitamin E, ferulic acid,  at a sub-3.5 pH. As a result, due to this powerful combination, the serum is effective for a minimum of 72 hours and reduces up to 48 per cent of damage from free radicals like pollution, stress, and sun. That being said, this serum is not God, so don’t think it replaces the need for sunscreen.

If you want to maintain healthy skin, applying sunscreen after this serum is the best option. For all the ladies that have had laser hair removal, this product has been tested and is safe for use post-laser.

  1. Dry Skin

Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum

The Sunday Riley serum is a creamier formula of ascorbate and feels almost like a moisturizer on the skin rather than a serum. If your skin type is dry, then this is the product for you. The formula includes jojoba and smells like citrus, thanks to its orange and tangerine peel. A reviewer said that their dark spots decreased by the fifth day when using this product.

  1. Combination Skin

Innisfree Green Tea Enzyme Vitamin C Brightening Serum

The Innisfree serum targets dark spots and shrinks pores thanks to its vitamin C and green tea enzyme combination. This product contains the same combination of Vitamin C, E, and Ferulic Acid that SkinCeuticals has – although their composition is not the same. The green tea enzymes gently exfoliates the skin and reduces redness. Reviewers say they do not feel the common tingling sensation that usually occurs when applying most vitamin C serums.

  1. Oily Skin

Ulta Beauty Vitamin C Complex Serum

Not only does this product contain L-ascorbic acid but it also contains a bioactive fruit complex derived from mango, papaya, and pineapple which makes the skin glow but not in an oily way. In fact, some reviewers say that it made their oily skin look and feel normal. This product is one of the cheaper serums you can find on the market.

  1. Sensitive Skin

TruSkin Vitamin C Anti-Aging with Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum

The TruSkin serum is hydrating but not greasy, sticky, or pore clogging.

Despite it being considered safe for sensitive skin, it’s still a good idea to apply a patch test first, as everyone’s skin may react differently.

The best way to use these serums:

Serums can be used daily or every other day. After cleansing, apply a few drops of serum to your face.
