Having someone you love in your life is a wonderful feeling, as relationships give you a sense of happiness and belonging. The latter is defined as a healthy mental stability, feeling loved and returning that love back. Starting a relationship is not always easy, as you might not know that person at first. The process is slow sometimes, yet you never know until you try, by proclaiming your interest and attraction to that person. When you understand what kind of relationship and partner you want, you should be direct and truthful to that person and communicate in a way that is calm and respectful. Once you have done that and they agree, then you will experience great feelings that are detailed below.

Acceptance

Being in a relationship means you spend lots of time with each other as much as possible. If you are ever feeling lonely, you can always reach out to your partner and share your feelings with them or go out with them to have a good time. Also, loneliness is a negative attribute that can affect your health; studies have shown that people who are lonely are more prone to health risks, like obesity, high blood pressure, and inflammation. Depression is another health problem that can stem from loneliness. Luckily, your partner can help you if you are ever feeling lonely, overcoming these problems together. And once you feel accepted with that person, you can truly be yourself, which is good for your health, as you don’t have to worry about being judged by that person. This notion is in relation to stress, which is prevalent from work, school, and finances. Luckily, your partner can overcome this stress by helping you in some way, making sure you do not handle the cause of your stress alone. This feeling of belonging demonstrates a positive cognitive sensation that makes you happy and more active in society.

Character Development

When you are in a relationship, you learn from each other, sharing your thoughts and ideas. This is important for your overall character, growing mentally and physically. It should be noted that some relationships start young, in a person’s teen years or earlier, and grow overtime. As the couple grows, they learn from each other, what they want their career to be, and if they want to work together. Furthermore, as you continue the relationship long-term, you find out aspects of yourself that you might not have even known, such as an interest in horse riding, etc.  Sometimes, your partner may want you to come out of your comfort zone, meaning to try new things you might not like. This can be a new food or a hobby (like indoor skydiving), allowing you to test your courage as part of your character. And you never know, this new hobby might become a staple of yourself. This is how having a relationship is beneficial to your character.

Cutting out bad habits

This benefit comes from your relationship, when your partner points out certain habits or an instance where you are doing something that is commonly frowned upon. This can be smoking (cannabis or tobacco) or excessive drinking, and substance abuse can damage a relationship. If you truly love your partner, you can sacrifice these bad habits to make your partner happy, resulting in no more substance use. This is not only beneficial for your health, but also with your relationship with your partner, who helps you overcome these flaws. This action is a double-entrée, as you learn to love your partner more while cutting out harmful traits from your life.

Social Communications

As mentioned above, being accepted is great for your health, as you and your partner keep each other company. But what about when you decide to go out to parties, social gatherings, and other events? If you only spend time together, it will become boring. This is why you utilize the communication methods you use with each other to socialize with other people, albeit platonic.  It is important for your mental health to learn to mingle with other people, to learn and even network as business partners. Using your relationship’s social skills allows for finding friends, and making you feel happy.

Higher Self-Esteem

When you are in a relationship, the love makes you feel better about yourself, as you have someone who likes you for who you are. This improves your self-esteem, establishing confidence in yourself to do new things and approach people you might feel shy. When your self-esteem is high, your anxiety and depression falls, making you a happier person. This notion is great for your health.
