Welcome to the ‘ber months, or should we say, the “brr” months. While it’s not necessary to put fashion on the backburner this season, it is necessary to learn the proper technique of layering. Layering is the perfect way to take a bulky outfit and turn it into one that’s stylish and cozy. Try these 7 essentials to stay trendy while keeping warm this winter.

1. Preppy Polo & Pull-Over Combo

One of the simplest ways to look classy when layering is by pairing a collared shirt under a crewneck sweater. Allow the collars from the shirt to pop out from the crewneck. Tug at the shirt sleeves so that about an inch shows beyond the bottom of the crew neck sleeves. Opt for a white, blue or pin-striped collared shirt – just be sure to choose a neutral crewneck so that you don’t have clashing colors or patterns.

This versatile preppy layering choice can be worn to the office, to church, to a coffee shop, during weekend outings, and to just about any other event.

    Shop this style:

    • Aritzia’s Sweat Fleece Cozy Fleece
    • Perfect Crew Sweatshirt – $75
    • Aritzia’s New Essential Classic Poplin Shirt – $98

    2. Vests are back!

No, you didn’t accidentally click on a blog from 2006…yes, you did in fact read the word “vests” correctly. While you may have been tempted to call the fashion police on us, we are just the messengers, and our message is loud and clear: vests are back in style! Hear us out, pair your favorite blouse under a chic neutral vest, ideally navy, beige or brown, for a sophisticated look or wear your vest underneath a blazer for extra warmth.

     Shop this look:

    • Dynamite: Millie Tailored Vest – $59.95

    3. Layered Legs

No skin shall be exposed to Old Man Winter. Whether mini or maxi skirts suit your fancy, pair either with black sheer tights and tall boots to avoid the winter chill while still looking fabulous.

      Shop this look:

      • H&M – Sheertex Ultra-strong Sheer Tights – $19.99 • H&M – Mini Skirt – $44.99

      4. Chunky Cable & Cape Coat

What’s a cape coat, you might ask? Think of a poncho. Cozy, and warm, but requires layers to complete the look. Pair a chunky cable knit sweater underneath a cape coat for added warmth. Trust us, you’ll walk around feeling just as if you were on a sofa under a soft blanket.

        Shop this style:

Thursdays – Shoulder Pad Cable Knit Sweater – $110 • Thursdays – Dark Brown Penelope Wool Cape Coat – $425

        5. Outdoor Winter Slippers

Have your toes ever been so cold that they start to cramp or go numb? If so, then you’ll understand why this sensation makes any outing unbearable. If you are planning a winter stroll through the park or simply need something warm to wear for an errand run, pair a thick pair of wool socks with some cozy winter boots.

          Shop this style:

          • UGG – Women’s Classic Mini Boot – $190

           • UGG – Women’s Rib Knit Slouchy Crew Sock- $25

          6. Collar & Coat

The trench coat is a seasonal staple that not only looks flattering on all body types, but also makes it super easy to add layers and mix and match different outfits. On warmer days, pair a collared shirt with your trench coat.

            Shop this style:

             • The Bay – Vero Moda Trench Coat – $119

             • Banana Republic – Luxe Wool-Blend Polo- $70

            7. The Final Layer

Scarves are one of the easiest ways to accessorize in the wintertime. By adding a pop of colour or pattern to an otherwise neutral outfit, you can express your personal style, all the while feeling extra snug.

              Shop this style:

              • Oak + Fort – Patterned Scarf with Tassels -$48

In true Canadian fashion, learning to layer is the only way to survive the blustery winters. Besides, there’s no reason to settle for warmth over style when there is always a way to rock both.
