Welcoming a new life into the world is undoubtedly one of the most profound experiences a woman can have. However, along with the joy and satisfaction that motherhood brings, many women face serious challenges in adjusting to the often-harsh physical transformation that the body undergoes during and after pregnancy. There are effective ways to embrace and celebrate your body after childbirth by learning to deal with postpartum issues. 

1. Accept the Changes

It’s important to be realistic about pregnancy and childbirth. Remember that you’re not alone in this journey, and your journey is unique. Don’t compare yourself to friends whose experience seems easier than yours, and don’t get caught-up in the social media hype. At the end of the day, everyone’s bodies and circumstances are different.

Remember the rigours your body experienced for nine months as it grew, and then delivered the baby. There was weight gain, stretch marks, changes in breast size and shape, varicose veins, backaches, vaginal tearing, swollen feet, acne, hair loss, urinary incontinence, insomnia, anxiety, to name a few. The body will take weeks, if not years, to return to normal, depending on your age, level of fitness, genetics, and motivation.

These are significant physical transformations, and it’s essential to acknowledge and accept the changes in your body. Instead of fixating on returning to your pre-pregnancy body, focus on accepting and appreciating your body for the miraculous journey it has undergone. Remind yourself that these changes are a testament to the strength and resilience of your body in providing the miracle of bringing new life into the world.

2. Bask in Self-Compassion

Be gentle with yourself during the postpartum period. It’s natural to experience joy, exhaustion, anxiety, and sadness. Allow yourself to feel these emotions without judgment. Your body is a scientific masterpiece and will function optimally, if given the right tools. Some changes occur due to hormonal shifts, and will normalize within the first few weeks or months after delivery. Your body requires health-promoting behaviours. Eat, drink, get rest, and don’t stress.  Your body is capable, and you should not feel guilty to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

3. Focus on Health, Not Weight Loss

It’s normal to want to quickly shed the extra pounds gained during pregnancy, but it’s essential to approach postpartum fitness with a focus on health rather than simply weight loss. Instead of resorting to crash diets and food restrictions, give yourself permission to eat foods you enjoy. By allowing all foods, you can eat them in moderation and in accordance with your body’s hunger and fullness signals. Keep in mind that you’re also still in the process of healing, possibly breastfeeding, not getting much sleep, and carrying around a little bundle of joy. All these things require more energy, and may mean that you have a bigger appetite than you did even during pregnancy.

4. Getting Support is Key

Don’t hesitate to reach out for support if you’re struggling with physical discomfort, breastfeeding challenges, or feelings of isolation or despair. There are resources available to help you navigate these difficulties. Join a new moms’ support group, or connect with other mothers online. Seeking guidance from a healthcare provider is helpful. Talking openly about your experiences and sharing tips with other mothers can provide invaluable support and reassurance. 

Surround yourself with people who offer encouragement as you navigate the challenges of motherhood. Your partner’s role is also important, as he will have to understand that sex will have to wait until the body heals. Communication will be critical for you to express your feelings honestly and count on his love, support, understanding, and acceptance. 

5. Self-Care is Critical

The demands of caring for a newborn makes it easy for new moms to sacrifice their own needs. Prioritizing self-care is essential for your well-being and ability to care for your baby effectively. It is imperative that you carve out time daily for activities that replenish your energy. Instead of intense workout regimens, prioritize activities that promote overall well-being, such as gentle exercise, yoga, and walking with your baby in a stroller. Remember that it took nine months for your body to grow and nurture a new life, so be patient and give yourself time to gradually regain strength and fitness.

Embracing your body after childbirth is a journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and self-love. You will forever love the new baby you brought into this world, but caring for, loving and accepting your post-delivery body and dealing effectively with post partum issues will go a long way in how you cope as the baby thrives. Be patient, be kind to yourself, and trust in your body’s innate wisdom as you embark on this transformative journey into motherhood.
