Women have always been fascinated by the power of oil; in fact, few beauty products have the same claim to fame as oils have for the skin. Ancient Egyptian queens, such as Cleopatra, favoured olive and sesame oils, while others preferred rose oil. Even in biblical times, oil was a staple beauty product. So, what’s the secret behind using oil for skin?

Having been used for millenniums for skin and hair care, oil has the power to moisturize, protect, and smooth the skin’s surface; it also has antibacterial qualities. Although the cosmetic industry has taken the world by storm by introducing different variations to beauty oils, natural oils are by all means an all-time favourite among many. That’s because they are additive-free and affordable.

If you haven’t used natural oils for your skin before, you might have concerns about rashes, breakouts, and allergies. Nevertheless, you could initially try one of the many variations of natural oils and test them out before applying them on a regular basis. 

How to Use Essential Oils for Beauty

Essential oils are concentrated extracts from plants; although they are obtained through mechanical processes, they still mostly retain the natural smell and flavour of their source. 

If you have sensitive skin, oils like tea tree oil and lemon oil can cause allergic reactions more quickly than olive oil and coconut oil. Tea tree oil, for example, is commonly used as an antibacterial and antifungal ingredient; however, applying it to open wounds isn’t advisable, as it may cause allergic reactions, especially in individuals with sensitive skin.

It’s a given that some oils are more prone to produce allergic reactions than others, especially if you have sensitive skin or eczema. Some have found it helpful to dilute the oil a bit before applying it to the skin. Whatever you choose to do, it’s advisable to consult a dermatologist to receive recommendations on which essential oils are best for you.

Using natural oils for your skin has several benefits; besides hydrating your skin, they provide it with the needed nourishment while protecting it from the elements. Natural oils are also known to improve the skin’s elasticity and even out the skin tone. If you’ve ever wondered which oils to use, here is a selection of eight natural oils that can provide you with a much-needed glow.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, and it’s also easily absorbed by the skin. It is an excellent source of vitamins E and K and has a few antibacterial properties. Unlike other types of oils, it can easily cause breakouts; that’s why it’s advisable not to apply it to your face, especially if you are prone to acne. Applying cold-pressed coconut oil to your skin can instantaneously moisturize it and smooth it out.

Olive Oil

Just like coconut oil, olive oil is a great moisturizer; it also contains several vitamins, including A, D, E, and K. Due to its thick consistency, it’s ideal for use all over the body. If you suffer from dry skin, try using an olive oil bar of soap or a cleanser to smooth out your skin. If you have acne-prone skin, don’t use olive oil, as it can easily clog your pores. Try other variations like sunflower oil or jojoba oil. 

Sunflower Seed Oil

High in vitamin E, sunflower oil doesn’t easily clog your skin pores, making it suitable to use on various skin types that are acne-prone. Vitamin E is an excellent antioxidant that protects the skin from damage caused by free radicals and environmental stressors.

Shea Butter

Derived from the nuts of the African shea tree, shea butter melts at body temperature due to its rich composition of fatty acids and vitamins, which protect against cell damage and prevent dryness and irritation. 

Jojoba Oil

Native to Mexico, jojoba oil is suitable for all skin types. It closely resembles natural oils produced by the skin. It can be used as a cuticle oil or makeup remover. It has antibacterial properties and easily dissolves blackheads and whiteheads, making it ideal for use on acne-prone skin. 

Almond Oil

Rich in vitamin E, zinc, protein, and potassium, almond oil is typically extracted from raw, pressed almonds. It generally has a lighter texture than other oils, such as olive oil and shea butter. Because it’s rich in antioxidants, it reduces signs of visible ageing and improves your complexion. 

Grapeseed Oil

Ideal for individuals experiencing inflammation and conditions such as acne and rosacea, grapeseed oil is recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties. Before applying it, perform a patch test on your skin to determine if you are allergic to it.

Rose Hip Seed Oil

Extracted from the seeds of the wild rose bush, rose hip seed oil helps reduce the appearance of scars and gives your skin a bright, glowing appearance. It also reduces visible signs of ageing and hydrates the skin.
