Pregnancy is a special time in a woman’s life, when she needs to pay extra attention to her health and overall well-being. It includes being mindful of the products she uses, including hair care products. While most hair care products are safe for use during pregnancy, some contain ingredients that can potentially harm the developing fetus. This blog discusses various hair care products to avoid during pregnancy, to help expectant mothers make informed choices for their hair care routines.

Hair Dyes with Harmful Chemicals

Many hair dyes contain chemicals — such as ammonia, peroxide, and PPD (p-Phenylenediamine) — that are absorbed through the scalp and into the bloodstream. While research on the safety of hair dye during pregnancy is limited, avoiding it during the first trimester when the baby’s organs are forming is advisable. Opt for ammonia-free and natural hair dyes if you must colour your hair, in a well-ventilated area.

Chemical Hair-Straightening Treatments

Chemical hair-straightening treatments like keratin contain formaldehyde or other harsh chemicals that can pose risks during pregnancy; the fumes emitted during the treatment can be harmful when inhaled. Consider using heat-free methods to straighten your hair, like using a flat iron on a low setting or choose a safer alternative, like a blowout.

Hair Relaxers

Hair relaxers contain strong chemicals, like sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide, that penetrate the scalp and potentially affect the fetus. These chemicals sometimes cause scalp irritation and discomfort. Instead, embrace your natural hair texture during pregnancy, or explore non-chemical alternatives for managing your hair.

High-Intensity Scalp Treatments

Avoid scalp treatments that cause intense tingling, or with strong menthol or salicylic acid. These ingredients can be absorbed through the scalp and may lead to adverse reactions. Opt for gentler, natural scalp treatments that won’t irritate your skin.

Hair Spray with High VOCs

Hair sprays that contain high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) release harmful fumes into the air, potentially affecting indoor air quality. It is best to use hair sprays labelled “low VOC” or “VOC-free”– to minimize exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Hair Loss and Regrowth Products with Minoxidil

Some hair loss and regrowth products contain minoxidil, an FDA approved medication for hair loss. While minoxidil is safe when used as directed, it’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider before using such products during pregnancy, for guidance based on your specific condition.

Retinoid-based Shampoos

This product is commonly used for its anti-aging and acne-fighting properties and has potential risks to the developing fetus. Retinoids, derivatives of Vitamin A, can lead to congenital disabilities and other complications if absorbed through the scalp and into the bloodstream.

Phthalates

Phthalates originate from chemicals commonly used as plasticizers and are found in many hair care products. The ingredients can disrupt endocrine function and various reproductive and developmental issues. Pregnant women must carefully read labels and choose phthalate-free hair care products to minimize exposure.

Parabens

Parabens are a preservative in many hair care products. These chemicals can mimic estrogen and disrupt hormonal balance, which may affect fetal development and increase the risk of developmental and reproductive issues. Parabens are readily absorbed through the skin and can accumulate in the body, posing a potential threat to both the mother and the unborn child.

Strong Fragrance Hair Products

Hair products with strong fragrances may trigger nausea or odour sensitivity, which are typical pregnancy symptoms. Consider fragrance-free or lightly-scented hair care products to prevent discomfort. Embrace a more natural and gentle approach to hair care during this time, and remember that your well-being is the top priority.
