Having a relationship entails investing time and effort to make it work. Granted, the daily grind and life’s challenges can take a toll on your relationship. Maintaining a thriving relationship takes effort. It’s not all love and romance as portrayed by Hollywood movies.

Whether you are married, dating, or living with a partner, you will undoubtedly look for ways to strengthen your relationship. After all, a relationship is like an investment; what you give is what you get. The more time you spend together, the stronger your bond will be.

Love isn’t only characterized by physical intimacy; it goes beyond attraction, affection, and mental and emotional bonding. Love is characterized by acceptance, understanding and support. It involves being there for your partner when they need you, without fear of being abandoned or misunderstood.

Whether your relationship is on the rocks or at its best, here are a few suggestions to spice up your love life.

Step Away from Your Phone

A phenomenon known as “Phubbing,” or partner phone snubbing, is taking a toll on relationships. It involves being distracted by your cell phone while in the company of your partner. Putting away your phone will boost your love life by showing appreciation for your partner and giving them undivided attention. You can put your phone on silent for half an hour or place it in an inconspicuous spot while having a heart-to-heart chat with your partner.

Create Novel Experiences

Even though you might have your favourite dating routines, boredom, and redundancy can quickly creep in. To shake things up, think of creative experiences or date nights. If an adventurous expedition like rock climbing or a safari appeals to you, consider including it to bring more excitement to your relationship. Relationship experts agree that couples who focused on novel and ingenious dates rekindled their love and felt much closer to one another.

Build Trust

Trust is fundamental to a successful and healthy relationship. Lack of trust often lead to anxiety and resentment, creating a barrier between you and your partner. Even though we might all face some form of betrayal or lack of trust at some point in life, keeping it intact in your relationship is imperative. You can build trust by regularly communicating with each other, taking responsibility for your actions, being faithful, and living up to your word.

Show Love

Small gestures go a long way in keeping your relationship alive. Happy couples are kind to one another. Small acts of kindness are a powerful way to express love. Love doesn’t always have to follow a tit-for-tat policy. Unconditional love means expressing acts of kindness without expecting something back. Unplanned acts of kindness will fuel the overall wellbeing and health of your relationship.

Be Grateful

Gratitude can bolster your relationship, regularly expressing gratitude can make you feel better. Research has shown that expressing gratitude releases oxytocin, a love hormone that builds a greater connection and bond between couples. So go ahead and thank your partner for small gestures; it can go a long way in making them feel loved and appreciated.

Celebrate Together

Strong relationships are characterized by sympathetic joy. Celebrating small or big milestones can draw you closer to each other and give you a sense of unity. Whether you have been dating for one year or married for five, it’s always fun to celebrate each other’s achievements together. Research has shown that couples who celebrate life’s accomplishments together are happier in their relationship.

Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness is crucial in a relationship because it wards off resentment, one of the biggest relationship killers. Without forgiveness, transgression festers and slowly erodes your relationship. True forgiveness takes strength to do, especially if you were deeply hurt or offended. Nevertheless, it has long-lasting mental, physical, and emotional benefits.

Share Memories

Reminiscing can enhance your relationship; life is full of stressors that can lead to disconnection and negativity. Remembering things like your first date, first home, and funny memories with your kids or family leads you back to good feelings. Those small stories can impact your relationship by reminding your partner why they fell in love with you in the first place.

Life is full of distractions that can draw you away from the ones you love most. Nevertheless, research has shown that it’s not compatibility or personality traits that keep couples together; rather, it’s how they interact. How you speak and get along with each other can contribute to the success of your relationship!
