A trip to the nail salon should feel like a pampering escape, not a session full of awkward etiquette blunders. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, there are some unspoken rules that nail artists wish every client knew. We spoke with professional nail techs to uncover the top habits that can disrupt your appointment or worse, put your health at risk.

Here are six things you should never do at a nail salon:

Showing Up with Dirty Hands or Feet

Arriving with unclean nails or feet is not just inconsiderate—it can also affect the quality of your service. Nail artists appreciate clients who come in with clean skin and nails. A quick wash before your appointment shows respect for your technician’s time and hygiene standards. Keep wipes or sanitizer in your bag and wash up before you sit down.

Cutting Your Cuticles at Home

It might be tempting to “prep” before your visit, but cutting your cuticles yourself can lead to cuts, infections, or uneven skin. Leave cuticle care to the professionals, who have the right tools and training. If you must groom at home, gently push your cuticles back with a wooden stick.

Using Your Phone the Entire Time

Scrolling or texting during your manicure may seem harmless, but it makes the job harder for your nail tech, especially during polishing or detailed nail art. Movement can lead to smudges or delays. Take a moment to unplug and relax—it’s your self-care time!

Bringing Children to the Appointment

Unless your salon caters to children or you’re booking a mommy-and-me treatment, it’s best to leave little ones at home. Salons are full of sharp tools and chemicals, and disruptions can affect your experience and others’. Think of your appointment as a mini-retreat—just for you.

Skipping the Tip or Under-Tipping

Tipping is customary in the beauty industry. Your nail artist provides a personalized service, and tips often make up a significant portion of their income. Unless service is poor, a 15–20% tip is standard. If you’re unsure about what to tip, ask the front desk what is customary at that salon.

Staying Silent About Discomfort or Preferences

If something feels off—a painful filing, a crooked nail, or a colour you don’t love speak up kindly and clearly. Nail artists want you to leave happy, but they can’t read your mind. Be polite but honest. A sound technician will appreciate your feedback and adjust.

Respect the Tools, Respect the Space

Avoid touching salon equipment, digging into your bag during service, or bringing food or drinks into the workspace. These habits can interrupt the flow of your appointment and compromise sanitation standards. Nail salons operate under strict hygiene protocols, and respecting the environment helps ensure a safe, smooth experience for everyone involved.

Finally

Let your nail tech shine. Trust the tech’s expertise—but remember, your tech values your feedback, too. A good salon experience is a team effort and your nail artists work hard to give you beautiful, lasting results. So next time you sit in that comfy chair, remember these no-nos and treat yourself to a smooth, stress-free salon visit.
